Laboratory Services

Onslow Memorial's laboratory offers a comprehensive selection of tests and services. Directed by experienced, board-certified pathologists, the lab employs only fully-trained, certified medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians, cytotechnologists, and phlebotomists. The laboratory is inspected and accredited by the College of American Pathologists, a comprehensive and highly regarded organization.

Our lab strives to accurately and efficiently perform physician-ordered tests and rapidly provide clear and timely reports. Our pathologists are always available to discuss concerns and to assist in interpreting reports. We always welcome patient comments to help us improve the quality and depth of our services.

Result Reporting
Results of all tests performed in Onslow's laboratory are computer generated and promptly delivered to the ordering healthcare provider. These results are delivered either electronically or by hand delivery. Patients may obtain test results from their healthcare providers.

Reference Testing
We perform 97 percent of all ordered tests in our own lab at Onslow Memorial Hospital. Our reference laboratories are selected by the director of pathology and approved by the hospital's medical staff. The major approved reference laboratories are:

• American Red Cross Reference Laboratory.
• Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
• Laboratory Corporation of America.
• North Carolina Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources.

Requests to send tests to non-approved reference laboratories must be processed and handled by the requesting entity.

Hours of Operation
Laboratory Test Analysis. Technical and support personnel are on duty 24 hours a day, and most essential tests are performed 24 hours a day. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, the lab provides only the most essential services.

Inpatient Specimen Collection. Phlebotomists and technical staff collect inpatient specimens throughout the hospital 24 hours a day. Inpatient specimens collected by unit personnel are received at the Specimen Processing Area in the front of the laboratory.

Outpatient Specimen Collection. Specimens are collected at the Onslow Memorial Hospital Outpatient Entrance, located at the front of the hospital at 317 Western Blvd., and at our satellite facility, Onslow Diagnostics, on 200 Memorial Drive. All patients must provide test orders from a healthcare provider and current insurance cards and information.
