Nursery and Pediatrics
Onslow Memorial provides quality health care and nurturing for area children from birth through adolescence, with a special emphasis on involving parents in the ongoing care of their children.
Nursery Care
Onslow Memorial provides three levels of care for newborn babies: Well baby, Level I Nursery, and Level II Nursery. The Well Baby Nursery can accommodate 22 babies who require newborn baby care. The Level I Nursery is a continuing care unit designed for "feeders and growers," or babies who need more comprehensive monitoring and observation. This level has 14 beds and may care for babies with jaundice or those who need breathing monitors. The Level II Nursery, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, has a four-bed capacity and provides care to newborns who require intensive nursing and medical care.
Our nurseries are supported by a board-certified Neonatologist and two Neonatal nurse practitioners, as well as a large support staff who are trained to care for babies with various needs. Onslow Memorial also provides a transport team to pick up babies who need more intensive care from other facilities without Level II nurseries. With the latest technology and equipment, Onslow's nurseries are able to monitor infant heart rates and oxygen levels, as well as implement ventilators and environment-controlled isolettes.
Pediatric Care
Onslow Memorial's 16-bed pediatric unit cares for the 30,000 children in the Onslow County and Lejeune Marine Base area. In this department, we see patients from infancy to age 17, and usually care for about six patients per day.
In addition to top-notch medical care supported by the three local pediatrician practices and a staff of certified nurses, Onslow is also dedicated to providing a positive experience for both parents and children. All nurses are trained in strategies for dealing with children of various ages in order to minimize fears and maximize patient care. Our department playroom includes age-appropriate toys and videos to help create a positive experience for our patients. And we also encourage parents to remain with their children as much as possible. To this end, we provide accommodations for parents to stay overnight with their children at the hospital.
